Problem

adidas Confirmed introduced a new shopping feature for collections in its app, which allows the user to filter products by different categories. These categories are planned to be customizable according to the collection and partner’s requests. To enable this, the ask was to implement a new feature in the admin tool - allowing the operations team to select and/or create these categories, mapping the products into the categories they belong to.

Design Explorations

1. Integrating the new feature

There was an existing event creation UX flow. Thus, as a first step, the team evaluated the current flow, mapping out and identifying potential integrations points of where this additional step could be. When creating a new event in the admin tool, the first step requires to add all products of a collection to the event (adding them via a product ID). It was decided to integrate the category mapping as a logical next step in the flow: the team took advantage of the already existing aspects function which allows the user to define different event properties. A new aspect called “Collection Categories” was created which would enable the operations team to map products into categories.

2. Feature Design & Function

Additionally, it was key to figure out how the function and design of the new feature should look like. The team explored different options keeping in mind the existing design and functionality of aspects and the overall tool.

Outcome

Adding a Categories & Products

The category name needs to be submitted in the type field of the collection categories. If it already exists in the system, it simply can be added in a bucket below. If a category does not exist, the user needs to create a new one first After aligning with the PO the team decided that the simplest solution was to type or paste all Product IDs in the submit button field in order to add them to the category. Added products can then be removed by the x and order can be changed by dragging.

Category Visualization

The decision was made to implement a category list view as it was in alignment with the previous design. Also, it provides a clean overview of all categories and included products in once glance.

Copy and Translations

since confirmed is live in diverse markets, there is a need to support multiple languages. We had to ensure that there was an easy way to check which translations of the category names were already in place and how to easily request missing ones.

Result

The ‘Collection Categories’ was developed and embedded in the event creation flow, being used for the first time on the Gucci x adidas collection. Feedback from the Operations team was genuinely positive.

”Using the collection categories was really simple and intuitive to use. I thought it was going to much of a hassle, but this it’s very convenient.”

Our users found the categories to be useful as well, with 83% engaging with the new feature to find the right product. Additionally, other collaboration partners are currently exploring to use this approach for their upcoming collections.
